Thus, once [we] possess non-partisanship, the next qualification [we] must have is intelligence. Otherwise you follow him without being attached to what is in your mind; then, when you listen to him this way, you will follow him this way, and when you listen to him that way, you will follow him that way, [in that case] you are hopeless! Non-partisanship is already very difficult, and if you do not possess intelligence, especially during this present time, when true virtuous teachers are not lacking but are just rare and outnumbered by average beings; if you listen to him and follow him around, that is harmful – a blind leading numerous blinds, and together they fall into the fire pit. What is the condition of our current normal state? It is like “one dog barking at a shadow, and hundreds of dogs barking at the noise.” Often, at night we hear dogs barking, a dog sees a shadow, well, starts to bark; all the other dogs follow and bark together. It sounds like there is much commotion. Actually, what kind of shadow is this? It is the wind blowing through the swing grass! You cannot claim that there is no influence, yet it is totally irrelevant. This is what the text refers to as “counterfeit paths”, we must distinguish this clearly, must distinguish this clearly. By doing so, we will have the opportunity not to live wastefully.
