Many practitioners often assumed taking refuge is merely going through the ceremony and receiving the “Refuge Passport 皈依证” and the bestowed “Dharma Name 法名“.
Taking refuge is not performed via emotions and it is scientific as it is based on logical reasonings. Consequently, it is able to withstand the test of time too!
Lam Rim Chen Mo (Chapter 11 Going For Refuge To The Three Jewels Pg 177-190) provides a very detail explanation of what it means to take refuge with the Three Jewels.
